Speech given by John Luyer, grandson of H.E. Braine - 3rd April 2005.

"Henry Edward Braine was born in the U.K.  in 1884. He left home at the age of 15. He had a strong sense of purpose.

Throughout the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and indeed up to his death in 1957 his name was associated with the grain industry in WA.  Throughout much of that time he was currently the CEO of both Co-operative Bulk Handling and the organisation we know as the Grain Pool.

He had a strong interest in the Arts  particularly Theatre and Ballet.  He played a role in the retention of His Majesty's Theatre in Perth.  He took an interest in sustainable agriculture and in the environment.  He was a member of  "Men of the Trees" and paid the membership of others in his family.

He spent his early time in WA in the South and I think it is indeed fitting that the prize is named after him.  Although H.E. Braine was head of Co-operative Bulk Handling through its formative years he attributed much of its success to teamwork.

I am confident that much of the success of the Friends of the Porongurup Range comes through strong leadership and teamwork.  I congratulate them on the acquisition of Twin Creeks Nature Reserve and on the holding of this event, paricularly this year under some trying conditions."

Art in the Park - will again take place during Easter 2006

Come and see the man made sculptures whilst you wander through the giant karri forest.  Sit and enjoy the views - Bring a picnic, relax, and spend an unforgetable day with us

A sculptural exhibition in a natural setting
Castle Rock Road
Porongurup National Park

The Porongurup Range rises abruptly from the plains just 40 km inland from Albany in the Great Southern of Western Australia.

The Porongurup Range is renowned for its giant karri trees surrounding towering granite peaks, and is the perfect place to compare nature's forms with man-made sculptures.

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit, as this is when the karri trees strip their outer bark to reveal a palette of orange and gold hues underneath, giving the forest a warm and welcoming glow. The nights may be cool, but the days are clear and usually sunny - perfect for exploring the area. So why not bring a picnic with you and relax after your stroll through the forest whilst you decide on which exhibit to vote for.
